preston tucker & the tucker 48
Preston Tucker would gain an interest in automobiles at an early age. When he was 13 he was working as a clerk for Cadillac in Detroit. Throughout his life he work at a Ford factory, sell many different makes of vehicles including Dodge and Studebaker. He would eventually move close to the Indianapolis Speedway and team up with Harry Miller to build race cars and engines. Around 1936 he would develop a military vehicle and power turret...the turret was widely used in the military. Although Tucker had plans to produce a car earlier, the idea started to come together in 1945. The car was announced in December of 1946 and Tucker took the car on a promotional your when the prototype "Tin Goose" was built. Only 51 cars were built including the prototype and 47 still exist today. SEC filings toward the Tucker Corporation eventually caused its demise even though Tucker and few others were found not guilty of the charges of fraud among others. Many examples are in museums today.
